Why Wax Paper Is Usually Printed on One Side Only
1. Structural Difference Between Wax-Coated Side & Base Paper Side
Standard food-grade wax paper is single-sided wax coated.
The glossy wax coating layer is dense, water-proof and oil-repellent. Ink cannot penetrate the wax film and merely sits on its surface. Prints on wax side smudge easily, rub off with minor friction, and wash away once exposed to liquid. Print adhesion is extremely poor here.
The matte uncoated base paper has porous fiber structure. Ink seeps into paper fibers and cures firmly after drying, delivering scratch-resistant, long-lasting prints ideal for branding and graphics.
Double-sided printing is impractical: graphics printed on the wax side turn blurry and fade instantly, failing standard packaging printing quality requirements.


2. Functional & Food Safety Considerations (Core Reason)
Wax paper is primarily used as an oil-proof, non-stick barrier for wrapping bread, sandwiches, candies and baked goods.
In actual use, the wax-coated inner layer directly contacts food to prevent sticking and block grease penetration.
The uncoated outer matte side faces outward to display brand logos and product artwork for consumers.
Its built-in functional separation eliminates the need for double-sided printing. If graphics were printed on the wax inner side that touches food directly, printing ink would dissolve in grease and migrate into food, posing significant food safety hazards.
3. Production Defects of Double-Sided Printing
Printing on both sides creates severe manufacturing drawbacks and high reject rates:
Offset & smearing: Uncured ink on the slippery wax backside transfers onto conveyor rollers during production. Stacked finished sheets also rub against each other, damaging printed patterns.
Curling & warpage: Wax softens and shrinks when exposed to ink solvents and drying heat. Simultaneous double-sided printing creates uneven tension on both surfaces, causing consistent rolling and wrinkling.
Drying limitations: Wax melts at only 60–90°C. Higher drying temperatures dissolve the wax coating and cause machine sticking; low heat cannot fully dry double-sided ink, slowing down production throughput.
Misregistration: The ultra-smooth wax surface generates low friction, leading to sheet slippage during printing. Multi-color registration alignment cannot be maintained accurately.


4. Higher Production Cost for Double-Sided Printing
Double-sided printing doubles ink consumption and printing processing steps, raising direct processing fees.
Extra surface treatment such as corona activation and primer coating is mandatory to boost ink adhesion on wax layers, requiring additional machinery and raw material investment.
Higher waste rate of base paper and wax coating further inflates overall production expenses.
There is no commercial benefit for regular food packaging to adopt double-sided printing.
Supplementary Note: Double-Waxed & Double-Printed Wax Paper
Custom double-sided wax coated & double-sided printed wax paper exists but is extremely rare, only manufactured for niche industrial moisture-proof packaging. Mandatory extra processing includes corona surface activation to break the dense wax film and specialized food-safe anti-migration printing inks. Such customized stock costs 30%–80% more than standard single-sided printed wax paper, making it uneconomical for mainstream food retail packaging.
Brief Summary for Distributor/Trader
Wax coating repels ink and cannot hold stable prints; only uncoated base paper supports durable printing.
Printing on the food-contact wax layer risks ink migration and violates food safety standards.
