How to distinguish between kraft paper and greaseproof paper?
Normal kraft paper has no natural grease resistance, oil will soak through easily. Greaseproof paper is specially treated to block oil penetration. Kraft paper features high tear strength for dry goods outer packaging. Greaseproof paper is designed for direct contact with oily food like pastries and fried snacks.
Core Difference
Kraft Paper: Made from kraft wood pulp, high tensile strength and stiffness. Untreated kraft paper is NOT grease-resistant, oil penetrates quickly. Only coated kraft can be greaseproof. Best for dry bread, grains and outer packaging with natural rustic look.
Greaseproof Paper: Made with super-calendering or food-grade coating to form oil barrier. Smooth, thin, some are semi-transparent. For oily food: croissants, fried chicken, burgers. Note: Standard greaseproof paper is NOT baking parchment, not suitable for oven baking.
Quick test Drop cooking oil on the paper. Raw kraft absorbs oil immediately; greaseproof paper repels oil without soaking through.
